Francisco's research focuses on how firms and regions develop and leverage scientific and technical capabilities for economic growth. One of the areas where his work has been contributing to is our understanding of the forces that govern the organization of technological capabilities in supply chains. He has been studying these issues by integrating engineering and technology knowledge with economic methods, in particular econometrics, addressing new topics where both dimensions interact in complex ways. This line of research was at the core of the Sloan Industry Studies Fellow award, which “recognizes exceptional promise to contribute to the advancement of knowledge as well as to U.S. industrial development.” Another key area of work encompasses the broader context of science and technology policy, in particular the determinants of scientific productivity.
