Cranor Wins Privacy Award:
Lorrie Cranor (SCS/EPP) together with Norman Sadeh and Alessandro Acquisti
has been awarded the 2004 IBM Best Academic Privacy Faculty Award.
Adams Honored: Peter Adams (CEE/EPP) received the Sheldon K. Friedlander
Award for an outstanding dissertation in aerosol science produced in
the last three years at the fall meeting of the American Association
for Aerosol Research.
Morgan Chairing EP A-SAB: EPP Head Granger Morgan has been appointed
to a two-year term as Chairman of the EPA’s Science Advisory Board.
Along with the Defense Science Board, the SAB is one of the oldest and
best established science advisory organizations serving U.S. Executive
Branch Agencies. The position is nonpolitical.
Decision Science Top Rated: Carnegie Mellon's graduate programs in decision
science have received top honors in an evaluation conducted by the Decision
Analysis Society, which is part of INFORMS. Carnegie Mellon was only
one of three schools (along with Duke and Penn) to get both a five star
and four star ranking for elements of its program. EPP faculty in decision
science include Baruch Fischhoff (EPP/SDS), Paul Fischbeck (SDS/EPP)
and
Michael DeKay (Heinz/EPP).
Adler Named Andrew Carnegie Scholar: Nancy Adler (EPP/MechE undergrad)
has been named an Andrew Carnegie Scholar (ACS). The ACS recognizes
students who maintain a high academic standard, and who are also involved
in a broad range of activities on campus, or within the community. Nancy
is currently the President of EPP’s Student Advisory Council and
also the Treasurer for the Carnegie Mellon branch of the Society of
Women Engineers.
Houghton Stepping Down: Representative Amo Houghton (R-NY), a long time
supporter of improved science and technology advice to Congress, has
announced his retirement. Houghton was formerly CEO of the Corning Corporation.
Sloan and EPRI Renew Support: The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and EPRI
have renewed their support for Carnegie Mellon’s Electricity Industry
Center for an additional three years.
Gilmore Becomes ARCS Scholar: Elisabeth Gilmore (EPP doctoral student)
became Carnegie Mellon’s first Achievement Rewards for College
Scientists Scholar.
Davidson Faculty Chair: Cliff Davidson (CEE/EPP) has been elected to
serve as the CIT Faculty Chair Elect for the 2004-2005
academic year.
Lachow at NDU: Irving Lachow (EPP Ph.D., 1994) is teaching at the National
Defense University where he also serves as Director of the Advanced
Management Program and as Research Director for the Center for Information
Assurance Education.
Florig Delivers Keynote on Radiation Protection: At the July 2004 annual
meeting of the Health Physics Society, Keith Florig (EPP) presented
the Society’s G. William Morgan keynote lecture titled “Democratizing
Radiation Protection.”
NSF Recognition: Adrian Perrig (ECE/EPP) has received an NSF Career
Award. His student, Cynthia Kuo (EPP doctoral student), has received
an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship.
Reed Promoted: David Reed (EPP Ph.D. 1991) has been promoted to Executive
Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer at CableLabs.
Lange Becomes Executive Director: Dr. Deborah Lange is currently the
Executive Director of Carnegie Mellon’s Steinbrenner Institute
of Environmental Education and Research.

EPP
and SRA: Baruch Fischhoff (SDS/EPP) will begin a one-year term as President
of the Society for Risk Analysis in December 2004. Mitchell Small was
recently elected a Fellow of the Society bringing the total to four Fellows
in EPP.
Blumstein Morse Lectureship Awardee: Al Blumstein (Heinz/EPP) received
the prestigious Philip McCord Morse Lectureship Award from the Institute
for Operations Research and Management Science.
EPP at NRC: Mitchell Small (CEE/EPP) has been appointed a member of the
NRC Board on Environmental Studies and Toxicology. Joel Tarr (History/EPP/Heinz)
has been appointed a member of the NRC Committee on the Human Dimensions
of Global Change.
Hills in Chile: Alex Hills (EPP/ECE) will spend six months as Visiting
Professor at La Universidad Austral de Chile in Valdivia, Chile, where
he will assist the university’s Instituto de Informatica with curriculum
development.
Matthews and Horvath Co-Editors: Scott Matthews (CEE/EPP) and Arpad Horvath
(CEE Ph.D. 1997) co-edited a recent special issue on sustainable development
of the journal Journal of Infrastructure Systems.
University Professors: Granger Morgan (EPP/ECE/Heinz) and Joel Tarr (History/EPP/Heinz)
have been named University Professors at Carnegie Mellon, bringing the
total number of University Professors in EPP to eight. This is the university’s
highest academic recognition.
Amon Hispanic Engineer of the Year: Cristina Amon (MechE/ICES), Director
of Carnegie Mellon’s Institute for Complex Engineered Systems, received
the Hispanic Engineer of the Year Award from the Hispanic Engineering
Achievement Awards Corporation.
McMaster Developing EPP: McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada
is planning to develop a Masters Program in Engineering and Public Policy,
focusing particularly on issues of water, solid waste, deregulation of
the energy sector and sustainable engineering.
Atman Promoted to Full Professor: Cindy Atman (EPP Ph.D. 1990) was promoted
last fall to full professor in Industrial Engineering at the University
of Washington. She is also director of the Center for the Advancement
of Engineering Education.
Dayo Elected to CDM Board: The United Nations Framework Convention on
Climate Change announced that Felix Dayo (EPP Ph.D. 1982; EPP Adjunct
Faculty) has recently been elected as a member of the Meth Panel of the
Clean Development Mechanism
(CDM) Board.
Banerjee Appointed to Planning Commission: Rangan Banerjee (EPP Adjunct
Faculty) has been appointed as a member of an expert committee to develop
an Integrated Energy Policy for India.
Married: Congratulations to Susan Hassol on her recent marriage to Jeff
Friday; and to Paul Parfomak (EPP Ph.D. 1996) on his recent marriage to
Liza Kupczak.
New Arrivals: Congratulations to John Chung-I Chuang (EPP Ph.D. 1998)
and his wife Melissa on the birth of their twins, Cheryl Jia-Ning and
