Advisory
Board Visits EPP: An outside Advisory Board of leading
public and private sector experts in technology and public
policy visited EPP on November 20 and 21, 2000. Members
included: Robert Dunlap (Trustee), William Ellis (Trustee),
Alessandro Ovi (Chair; Trustee), Walter Baer, Susan Bailey
(EPP Ph.D. 1988), Peter Blair, Lewis Branscomb, Mary Good,
Jana Milford (Co-chair; EPP Ph.D. 1988), Gil Omenn, Marie-Elisabeth
Paté-Cornell, Robert Roberts, Ellis Rubinstein,
Roger Sant, and Kurt Yeager. Feedback has been extremely
positive and very useful.
Hills Lectures
in Singapore: Alex Hills (EPP/SCS) spent several weeks
this spring as the first Cheng Tsang Man visiting professor
in engineering at Nanyang Technological University in
Singapore where he lectured on his groundbreaking work
in wireless communication.
Caulkins
Heads Pittsburgh RAND: The new Pittsburgh office of
RAND is being headed by Jonathan Caulkins, a professor
in Carnegie Mellon's H. John Heinz III School of Public
Policy and Management. Caulkins and EPP faculty have held
a number of meetings to explore potential collaborations.
Berkenpas
Honored by DoE: Mike Berkenpas has been awarded by
the DoE National Energy Technology Laboratory with a "silver
award" for his contributions as part of the Mercury
Control and Cost Model Team. Mike was the only off-site
person included in this award.
Rubin Receives
Award: Edward Rubin (EPP/MechE) was the 2000 recipient
of the Air & Waste Management Association's Lyman
A. Ripperton Award for his distinguished professional
achievement as an educator.
CASOS 2000
Summer Institute: On July 16-25, 2000, 31 students
from all around the world participated in an intense hands-on
introduction to computational social science under the
supervision of Kathleen Carley (SDS/Heinz/EPP). Support
for the summer institute was provided by NSF.
Parfomak
Elected Junior Equity Partner: Paul Parfomak (EPP
Ph.D. 1996) was elected junior equity partner (Associate
Principal) in the Energy Practice at McKinsey & Company.
Xie Promoted:
Jinhong Xie (EPP Ph.D. 1991) has been promoted to
tenured Associate Professor, University of Florida.
McDaniels
Promoted: Tim McDaniels (EPP Adjunct Prof.) has been
promoted to Professor in the School of Community and Regional
Planning at the Univ. of British Columbia.
Hastings
Becomes Co-Director: On February 1, 2000 Prof. Daniel
Hastings became Co-Director of the Technology and Policy
Program (TPP) at MIT. He replaces Richard de Neufville
who built the program over many years.
Davidson
Heads AAAR: Cliff Davidson (CEE/EPP) has been elected
President of the American Association for Aerosol Research.
Toor Award
Winners: Recent Herbert L. Toor Awards for best EPP
qualifying papers were: 1999 - Patrick Gurian, "Estimating
the cost of a revised arsenic drinking water standard";
2000 - Anshu Bharadwaj, "Techno-economic analysis
of biomass based electricity for rural India"; 2001
- Anand B. Rao for his paper titled "A technical,
economic and environmental assessment of amine-based carbon
capture technology for greenhouse gas control."

& Risk: Jean
Camp (EPP Ph.D. 1996) has published a book titled Trust
& Risk in Internet Commerce, MIT Press: Cambridge,
MA, Winter 2000.
New Position:
Naomi (Angel) Merhav (EPP M.S. 1992) has been appointed
Head of the Local Planning Wing at the National Planning
Management in the Ministry of the Interior in Israel.
Riley Moving
to Smith: Donna Riley (EPP Ph.D. 1998) has been appointed
an Assistant Professor in Engineering at Smith College.
Best Paper
Award: Felicia Wu Morris' (EPP doctoral student) paper
"Cryptosoporidium Risk Communication: An analysis of
what people know and what they need to know" was judged
top-paper in the SRA Risk Communication Specialty Group's
student paper competition for 2000.
Louis Receives
Presidential Award: Garrick E. Louis (EPP Ph.D. 1996),
now Assistant Professor in Systems Engineering at the University
of Virginia, received the Presidential Early Career Award
for Scientists and Engineers in October 2000.
SSRN's Top
Ten: V.S. Arunachalam's (EPP/MSE/Robotics) paper "The
Indian Software Services Industry" was listed on the
Social Science Research Network's Top Ten download list
for the journal/topic "Market Structure (Topic)"

Andrew Carnegie Scholars: Judy Guo (ChemE/EPP BS 2000)
was a recipient of an Andrew Carnegie Scholar for 2000 and
Mark Sin (ECE/EPP BS 2001) is a recipient for 2001.
Lloyd Recognized:
Shannon Lloyd's (EPP doctoral student) presentation
in the GEMI Student Powerpoint Competition on sustainable
development received very high marks from the judges. As
a result, she was invited to attend the Conference in Baltimore.
Fukushima
Publishes Book: Shoichiro Fukushima (EPP MS 1998), with
T. Takahashi, has co-published a Japanese translation of
the book Knowledge Management: A guide for our jour-
ney to best-practice processes," JMAM Publishing
Co., 2000.
Carley Member
of Editorial Staff: Kathleen Carley (SDS/Heinz/EPP)
is a member of the editorial staff of the American Sociological
Review which is associated with the American Sociological
Association.
