George Brown Dies

Congressman George E. Brown Jr. (D-CA) died on July 16 at the age of 79. Brown, who was serving his 18th term as a member of Congress, has long been a tough, thoughtful and informed advocate for science and technology in the US Congress. He was former Chair of the House Science Committee and was ranking minority member. Speaking at a memorial service, Presidential Science Advisor Neil Lane concluded his remarks by quoting Mr. Brown's philosophy: "From my earliest days, I was fascinated by a utopian vision of what the world could be like. I've thought that science could be the basis for a better world, and that's what I've been trying to do all these years."

EPP Pursuing Ties with Delft and Eindhoven

More activities in the domain of technology and public policy occur in the Netherlands than in all the rest of Europe combined. Much of this work is concentrated in two EPP-like departments at the Technical Universities at Delft and Eindhoven. Over the past year, EPP and these two Dutch Universities have begun a program of active visits and exchange. A number of faculty, administrators and students from Delft and Eindhoven have visited EPP. EPP Department Head Granger Morgan has visited both Dutch Universities. The result of these exchanges has been the identification of clear areas of common educational and research interest and a decision to pursue opportunities for student exchange and other forms of cooperation.
