NEWS BRIEFS:

Sirbu Advises FCC: Marvin Sirbu (EPP/ECE/GSIA) is a member of the newly created Technical Advisory Council of the Federal Communications Commission.

Berkenpas Honored: Mike Berkenpas (EPP) was one of two top honorees in the 1998 College of Engineering Staff Recognition Award. He was recognized for exceptional job performance, extraordinary dedication, an unfailing positive attitude and for being a team player who serves as a role model for colleagues.

Curry Presidential Scholar: Tom Curry (CEE/EPP BS 1999) has received an ACS Presidential Scholarship, the sixth such award to an EPP student.

Hills Returns: Alex Hills has stepped down as Vice Provost for Computing Services at Carnegie Mellon and returned to a joint research track position in EPP and SCS to work on issues in telecommunications policy.

Stiber and Morgan Receive INFORMS Awards: Neil Stiber (EPP Ph.D. 1998) won the Decision Analysis Society Student Paper award in 1998 for his paper titled, "A Bayesian Belief Network Expert System for Screening Contaminated Sites." Kara Morgan's (EPP Ph.D. 1999) paper titled "Assessing the Multiattribute Model" was the winning entry for 1999.

Arnett moves from SIPRI for USDOS: Eric Arnett (EPP Ph.D. 1988) has left the Stockholm Institute of Peace Research, where he headed the Military Technology and International Security Project, to join the Arms Control Bureau of the US Department of State. He can be reached at arnetter@acda.gov.

Rubin on NRC Board: Ed Rubin (EPP/MechE) has been named to the National Research Council's Board on Energy and Environmental Systems.

Steiling Truman Nominee: Christopher Steiling (MechE/EPP Sr.) was one of four students nominated by Carnegie Mellon for the Harry S. Truman Scholarship.

XI takes new post: XI Xiao-lin (EPP Ph.D. 1992; Adjunct Associate Prof.) has been named Director of the Division of Bi-lateral Cooperation in the Department of International Cooperation of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

Jeäger Heads IHDP: Jill Jeäger has left her position as Associate Director at IIASA to assume the position of Executive Director of the International Human Dimensions Program on Global Environmental Change. She can be reached at fuj.jaeger@magnet.at.

White Heads DSSC: Robert White (ECE/EPP) has stepped down as head of ECE to take up full-time responsibilities as Director of the Data Storage Systems Center.

Lave SRA Distinguished Achievement Award Winner: Lester Lave (GSIA/EPP/Heinz) received the 1998 Society for Risk Analysis Distinguished Achievement Award, bringing to three the number of EPP faculty so honored.

Frey Promoted: Chris Frey (EPP Ph.D. 1991) was recently promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in the Department of Civil Engineering at North Carolina State University.

Graduate Student Activities Revitalized: The EPP Graduate Student Activities Committee has been revitalized. It organizes seminars, happy hours, and provides graduate feedback to the department. Alumni who would like to give seminars in DC or on campus should contact Timothy Johnson (tjohnson@andrew.cmu.edu) or Henry Willis (hhw@andrew.cmu.edu).

 

Rubin Receives Dowd Fellowship: Edward Rubin (EPP/MechE) has received a Dowd Fellowship to support the completion of his text book, Engineering and the Environment.

Hayakawa and Zhang Win Toor Award: The 1998 Herbert L. Toor Award for best qualifying paper went to Hiroshi Hayakawa for his paper titled "Comparing Automobile Risk Perceptions and Insurance-Consuming Behaviors in Japan and the United States," and to Jianyu Zhang for his paper titled "Concerns and Priorities of Stakeholders in Brownfields Decision Making." Both papers have now been accepted for publication.

Taylor Wins IIASA Award: Margaret Taylor (EPP Doctoral Student) won a fellowship to attend IIASA's summer program. She then won the best paper award that will bring her back to IIASA in the Spring of 2000.

Weaver Addressees Y2K: Kevin Weaver (EE/EPP BS 1983) is executive vice president of a small firm called Infoliant Inc. that supplies information on the Y2K compliance status of more than 36,000 hardware and software products. The firm is located at 2 Station Square, Pittsburgh, PA 15219.

Peha on Hill: Jon Peha (ECE/EPP) is completing a Fellowship position on Capitol Hill working on issues of telecom-munications policy. He will return to campus in January, 2000.

Jackson Assumes Added Responsibilities: TVA has named Kate Jackson (EPP Ph.D. 1990) to the new position of Environmental Executive to oversee the development of environmental strategy and policy throughout TVA. The new responsibility comes in additional to her role as Executive Vice President of River System Operations & Environment. She was the 1999 recipient of the Society of Women Engineers Upward Mobility Award.

Notarianni Featured by NAE: Kathy Notarianni (EPP doctoral student) was selected by the National Academy of Engineering to appear in their "Featured Engineer Profile." The NAE has created a gallery of women in engineering. Website is http://www.nae.edu/nae/cwe/

Lecture Series Starts Third Year: The Carnegie Lectures on Global and Environmental Change, a joint effort of Carnegie Mellon and the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, is now in its third year. Eight public lectures in 1999-2000 will include: Paul O'Neill of Alcoa (Jan. 10); Robert Kates of Brown (Apr. 10); and Klaus Hasselmann of the German Climate Computer Center (May 8).
