| What
is rEPPort?
rEPPort is an occasional newsletter published by the Department of Engineering
and Public Policy (EPP), a department in the engineering college at Carnegie
Mellon University. Patti Steranchak (412+268-1085) is the Managing
Editor. EPP offers joint undergraduate degrees with each of Carnegie
Mellon's five traditional engineering departments. These BS degrees
are designed to provide students headed into traditional engineering careers
with some additional understanding and skills to deal with problems that
involve the relationship between their technologies and the broader society.
At the graduate level, the department offers a research-oriented Ph.D.
which focuses on problems in which the technical issues are of central
importance. Doctoral graduates have the equivalent of at least an
MS in a traditional technical discipline. Areas of research activity
within the department include: energy environmental systems, including
environmental modeling on problems such as climate change; telecommunications
policy with a particular focus on issues related to standards; industrial
and manufacturing policy, including issues in flexible manufacturing and
robotics; problems in risk analysis, perception and management; the development
of computer-based tools to support quantitative policy analysis with special
attention to the treatment of uncertainty; technical problems in international
peace and security; and selected issues in technical education and the
work force.
Carnegie Mellon is unique among major US research
universities in having developed the ability to support and sustain an
interdisciplinary research environment in which joint academic appointments
work. Most EPP faculty hold joint appointments with traditional
disciplinary departments. These appointments bring disciplinary
strength to EPP and provide a vehicle by which EPP can involve people
all over the Carnegie Mellon campus in technically-focused policy research.
