NEWS BRIEFS:
At Clark University:
Risk expert, and former Provost, Roger Kasperson, has been named University
Professor. Land-use and land-cover expert Billie Lee Turner III
has been named first occupant of the Milton and Alice Higgens Chair
in Environment and Society.
Paté-Cornell and
Fischbeck Honored: On May 5, 1997, Prof. Marie-Elisabeth Paté-Cornell
of the Department of Industrial Engineering, Stanford University, and
Prof. Paul S. Fischbeck (SDS/EPP) received the Decision Analysis Publication
Award for 1994 for their paper "Risk Management for the Tiles of the
Space Shuttle." This award was presented by the Decision Analysis
Society of INFORMS.
Frey Receives NSF Award:
Prof. Christopher Frey (EPP Ph.D. 1991), Dept. of Civil Engineering,
North Carolina State University, has received an NSF Faculty Early Career
Development Award. He will use the support for his current research
on new methods for pollution prevention. He will also create detailed
case studies to illustrate the use of the new system models. He
plans to develop course materials in air pollution control, air quality
and systems engineering.
Jackson on CIT Advisory
Council: Dr. Kathryn J. "Kate" Jackson (EPP Ph.D. 1990) has
been appointed to the Advisory Council for the Engineering College at
Carnegie Mellon. The Council has been created to provide strategic advice
and assistance to the college. Kate is currently Senior Vice President
of the Resource Group at the Tennessee Valley Authority. She was
featured in an article in the Spring 1995 issue of rEPPort.
Chuang Receives Zipf Fellowship:
EPP Doctoral Student, John Chung-I Chuang, has been selected as the
inaugural recipient of the A.R. Zipf Fellowship in Information Management
awarded by the Council on Library Resources in Washington, DC.
The Zipf Fellowship was established to recognize a graduate student
who shows exceptional promise for leadership and technical achievement
in information management. John's research interests include the
economics of digital libraries, network pricing, cryptography and network
security, and telecommunications policy. He will use the fellowship
to support his dissertation research on the design and implementation
of digital libraries.
Hill is Vice Provost:
Prof. Christopher T. Hill, Professor of Public Policy and Technology
and Director of the doctoral program in public policy at George Mason
University, has been appointed Vice Provost for Research. His
responsibilities include facilitating, stimulating and regulating research
at George Mason. "We have enjoyed substantial growth in research
and external sponsorship of research at GMU for more than a decade,
and I hope to help all our departments and institutions continue this
successful record," Hill says.
Andrews Joins Rutgers:
Prof. Clinton Andrews has left the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and
International Affairs at Princeton to accept a tenure track appointment
in the Depart-ment of Urban Planning and Policy Development in the Bloustein
School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers University.
Davidson Elected Vice-President:
Cliff Davidson (CEE/EPP) is the vice president- elect of the American
Association for Aerosol Research (AAAR). The AAAR has more than
800 members in more than 20 countries. |

Ann Branscomb Dies:
Anne Wells Branscomb has died after a long illness. She was a leader
in the field of information technology and law. At the time of her
death she had just completed two new books: Emerging Law in the Networld
(Hampton Press) and a more personal book of essays tenta-tively titled
A Southern View with a Northern Exposure. A third book, a follow-on
to her very successful Who Owns Information (Basic Books, 1994) was nearing
completion. She is survived by her husband, Lewis Branscomb, a son
and daughter, and a new grand daughter who she recently visited.

Follin Receives Westinghouse
Scholarship: EPP doctoral student Jim Follin has been awarded
the B.G. Lamme Westing- house Scholarship, which is awarded to a Westinghouse
employee to do full-time graduate work for 10 months, with full pay.
Jim is analyzing environmental impact statements to determine the importance
of community involvement.
Tarr's Book Receives High
Honors: Joel Tarr's (History/EPP/Heinz) recent book Searching
for the Ultimate Sink: Urban pollution in historical perspective
(1996) has been selected as a "Choice Distinguished Academic Book for
1997." On another note, Joel has recently been selected as the new
president of the Urban History Association.
New Positions:
Dr. Jun Zhang (EPP Ph.D. 1993) now works with the Advanced Design Systems
team for Halliburton Company, Dallas, TX, on an expert system for automatic
mechanic designs. Prof. Jean Camp (EPP Ph.D. 1996) has recently
accepted a five-year appointment as an Assistant Professor at the Kennedy
School at Harvard University. Prof. Garrick E. Louis (EPP Ph.D.
1996) has recently accepted the position of Assistant Professor in the
Department of Systems Engineering at the University of Virginia.
Riley Receives Liebmann
Scholarship: Donna Riley (EPP Doctoral Student) was awarded
the Delores Zohrab Liebmann Scholarship. Donna is writing her dissertation
on human factors in exposure analysis, integrating information on consumer
beliefs and behavior with quantitative exposure models for home use of
methylene chloride-based paint removers.
Milford Granted Tenure:
Jana Milford (EPP Ph.D. 1988) has received tenure in the Department of
Mechanical Engineering at the University of Colorado, Boulder. She
is currently doing research on uncertainty analysis for air quality models
and teaching graduate research methods and freshman design courses.
Jana serves as a member of EPP's Advisory Board.
