What is RecycleMania?

RecycleMania is a competition and benchmarking tool for college and university recycling programs to promote waste reduction activities across their campus communities.

Over a 10 week period, schools report recycling and trash data which are then ranked according to:

Who collects the largest amount of recyclables per capita

The largest amount of total recyclables

The least amount of trash per capita

The highest recycling rate

Participating schools can then monitor each week’s reports and rankings to see how their results fluctuate against other schools and use this to rally their school to reduce and recycle more.

For more information, participating schools, etc. visit the RecycleMania Webpage for 2010 results!

Student involvement is important for discussion and implementing real change in our department. We have a need for you to help with the composting. Composting has really picked up thanks to the new location of the compost pail, staff seminar set up and especially volunteer compost carriers!

2 things you can do:

1) We are making a schedule for volunteers to transport the compost to the UC Compost Dumpster on Wednesday & Friday afternoons. Composting is only possible with volunteers like you. Please consider volunteering and let me know which days are better for you.

2) Dec.9th is the EPP/CEE Holiday Party from 3-6pm and we are making it a “near zero waste event!” Because we will be including recycling and composting, Barb Kviz has advised us to have a “Compost Host” to man the waste stations. The more volunteers we have the shorter the “hosting” time. Please let me know if you will participate.

Other discussion at the meeting included-

-Barb Kviz has offered to present a department seminar on “Recycling 101.” We decided that sometime after Feb. 14th will be best.

-Using silverware is still under scrutiny. The current obstacle is figuring out how to fit a dishwasher into our space.

-We started collecting for Terracycle brigades and a few other local recycling collections in our Copy/Mail room. Attached is the signage for what we collect. Please post/share as you see appropriate. We’ve added this posting to our department monitor as well.

-Recently, this blog was bombarded with spam. Spammers BEWARE!!!
