M.S. Degrees


Doctoral students in the department can elect to get an EPP M.S. along their way to the Ph.D. The requirements for the M.S. in EPP are given below. A number of students have elected to complete a M.S. in another CMU department while working towards their EPP Ph.D. Such a degree shows that the student has an additional level of expertise. Once the student has been enrolled in EPP they can discuss this option with their advisor or the Head of the EPP Graduate Education Committee. See "Joint Degrees" for more information.

Requirements for EPP M.S.
  1. Students must complete a minimum of 102 units as follows:
  2. completion of core courses, including the teaching practicum
  3. a minimum of 27 units in Type A courses (12-704 plus two technical electives)
  4. a minimum of 24 units in Type B courses (microeconomics course plus one social science/social analysis course)
  5. a minimum of nine units in independent research (19-750)
  6. Spend at least two academic semesters as a full-time graduate student in EPP. (This is required for the Ph.D. as well.)
  7. Pass the EPP qualifying process at the M.S. level or better.*
  8. Have their successfully completed* Part A qualifying paper approved by their advisor or the department head.
