BRIEFS:
Packard
Supports PCB Work: An interdisciplinary Carnegie Mellon
research team that includes EPP's Mitch Small (CEE/EPP)
has been awarded $1,000,000 over three years by the David
and Lucille Packard Foundation for a study of the "Effects
of Sediment Biogeochemistry on the Environmental Fate
and Persistence of Polychlorinated Biphenyls."
Hounshell
Becomes AAAS Fellow: David Hounshell (History/SDS/EPP)
has been elected to the rank of Fellow by the American
Association for the Advancement of Science for fundamental
research on the history of American manufacturing and
for innovative graduate training on the history of Cold
War science and technology.
EPP Honored:
EPP was the recipient of the Three Rivers Environmental
Award in the category "higher education." The Center for
the Study and Improvement of Regulation was a runner-up.
Bharadwaj
Tops His Class: Anshu Bharadwaj (EPP/MechE doctoral
student) received the Department of Mechanical Engineering's
Best Qualifying Exam Award for AY 2001-2002.
EPP Alums
Receive Fellowships:Sharon Jones (EPP Ph.D. 1996)
was a recipient of the 2001-2002 AAAS Diplomacy Fellowship.
Guodong Sun (EPP Ph.D. 2001; EPP Post-doc) has been selected
as the first winner of the E7 Post-doctoral Fellowship
for Sustainable Energy Development. He will spend the
first year of the two-year fellowship at the Harvard Kennedy
School in the Belfer Center for Science and International
Affairs.
Taylor
Receives Dissertation Award: Margaret Taylor (EPP
Ph.D. 2001) was awarded the Best Dissertation Award of
the Public and Nonprofit Division of the Academy of Management
for her thesis titled "The influence of government actions
on innovative activities in the development of environmental
technologies to control sulfur dioxide emissions from
stationary sources.
Toor Award:
Hisham Zerriffi (EPP doctoral student) received the
Herbert L. Toor Award for best EPP qualifier paper for
2002. His paper was titled "Electricity and Conflict:
Advantages of a distributed system."
Cassler
Fearing Recognized: Becky Cassler Fearing (CEE/EPP
BS 1999) has been named 2002 Dell Woman of Distinction.
Fischhoff
Addresses Psychology and Terrorism:Baruch Fischhoff
(SDS/EPP) presented an analysis of the psychological dimensions
of the threat of terrorism at the annual AAAS Science
and Technology Policy Forum in April 2002. He presented
related talks at a NATO-Russia Symposium, in Brussels,
a Congressional staff briefing.
Apt Receives
Metcalf Award: Jay Apt (EPP) has received the 2002
William Metcalf Award, a lifetime achievement award presented
by the Engineers' Society of Western Pennsylvania.
Funk Publishes
Two Books:Jeff Funk (EPP Ph.D. 1984) who is an Associate
Professor in the Research Institute of Economics and Business
Administration at Kobe University in Japan, has published
two books titled The Mobile Internet: How Japan Dialed
Up and the West Disconnected, ISI Publications and
Global Competition Between and Within Standards: The
Case of Mobile Phones, Palgrave Macmillan.

Keith
Assists Canada: David
Keith (EPP) is working with Environment Canada to develop
a broad strategic document on carbon management. Last summer
he spent two months working with the Alberta Research Council
on the injection of acid gases (H2S+CO2).
Fischhoff
Brings Social Science to EPA: Baruch Fischhoff (SDS/EPP)
coordinated and chaired a workshop on "Understanding Public
Values and Attitudes Related to Ecological Risk Management"
for the EPA Science Advisory Board.
Offshore
Platform Safety: Paul Fischbeck (SDS/EPP) and John Shultz
(EPP Ph.D. 1999) presented a paper titled "The perception
of risk at offshore production platforms: A summary report
of risk surveys of U.S. government platform inspectors"
at the International Gas Research Conference, Amsterdam,
ND.
Wu Paper
Wins Award: Felicia Wu (EPP doctoral student) won the
ExxonMobil Student Paper Award for Risk Communication at
the Society for Risk Analysis annual meeting, for her paper
comparing public perceptions of GMO's and pharmaceuticals.
Quandt Andrew
Carnegie Scholar: Lynna Quandt (ECE/EPP undergrad and
5th year Master) was a recipient of an Andrew Carnegie Scholar
Award for 2002. Lynna also served as one of EPP's Tom Johnson
Fellows, in the summer of 2001.
Hills Gives
Keynote Address: Alex Hills (EPP/SCS) was the keynote
speaker at the QUESTnet 2001 conference in Australia. He
spoke on Wireless Andrew, CMU's high-speed wireless network,
which is the first of its kind in the world.
Tokai Takes
New Position: JAkihiro Tokai has joined the Research
Center for Chemical Risk Management of the National Institute
for Advanced Science Technology, Ministry of Economy Trade
and Industry in Tsukuba Science City, Japan where he is
team leader of risk assessment and management for chemicals.
Xie Becomes
U.S. Citizen: Following a two-year bureaucratic hassel,
with the help of Senator Bill Nelson of Florida, XIE Jinhong
(EPP Ph.D. 1991) took the oath of U.S. Citizenship in November
in Jacksonville, Florida.
Carley Receives
Lifetime Achievement Award:Kathleen M. Carley (SDS/EPP)
was a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the
American Sociological Association's Sociology and Computers
Section for work that exemplifies "the use of computers
to enhance our understanding of social life."
Farrell in
Hamburg: Alex Farrell (EPP) presented an invited talk
titled "Multi-lateral emissions trading: Implications from
U.S. inter-state NOx control" to the Hamburg Institute of
International Economics.
Rod Passes
Away:It is with sadness that we report that Sam Rod
(EPP Ph.D. 1989) died in a two-car accident in Indiana on
September 15, 2001. He was driving home from Denver after
his flight was canceled by the September 11th attacks.
