winter. Presentations were made by faculty involved in Princeton's
new Ph.D.+ program, in which traditional graduate students in science
and engineering add courses and research in environmental policy as
well as by faculty from a number of other innovative programs around
the US. EPP Associate Head, Mitchell Small (CEE/EPP) described
the EPP undergraduate and graduate programs. Kathryn Jackson (EPP Ph.D.
1990), Catherine Peters (EPP Ph.D. 1992), and former EPP post-doc, Valerie
Thomas, were active participants in the meeting, providing a tangible
illustration of the value of a fundamental, yet flexible and interdisciplinary
graduate education. The workshop report is available on the web at http://www.princeton.edu/~cees/.
Diwekar Chairs Conference:
Urmila Diwekar (EPP/CEES) ran a topical conference entitled "Batch Process
Design and Operations," at the AIChE Spring National Meeting. The conference
dealt with all aspects of the design of batch processes, including retrofit,
trade-offs between design and operations, design under uncertainty,
industrial case studies, scheduling and planning, and new design methodologies.
Diwekar was recently elected as Director of the Computing and Systems
Technology (CAST) division of AIChE.
